Ofsted Report on vocational education

Commenting on the Ofsted report Economics, business and enterprise education, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers' union said;

“This report shows that the effectiveness of economics and business education was good or outstanding in 78 per cent of schools visited. It is surely a cause for celebration that this has been shown to be the case in the vast majority of schools.

“Businesses, and especially small or medium sized enterprises in localities of schools and colleges, should of course be encouraged to take an interest in working with schools and colleges. The NUT is an enthusiastic supporter of the Education and Employers Task Force which encourages liaison between schools and the world of work.

“The NUT would support assessment that is fit for purpose. Not all subjects or types of qualification are best assessed by exam. Vocational awards by their nature should be practical.

“It is extremely encouraging that whole school enterprise education is developing “good problem solving and team-working skills, including negotiation, cooperation, planning and organisation”. These are useful skills for work and adult life, and in an era of rising youth unemployment such a contribution to a rounded education is important. Schools should be praised for this finding”.
