OECD report rejects coalition government's education policies

13 September 2011

Commenting on the publication today of the OECD report 'Education at a Glance 2011', Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said:

“The OECD report is a damning indictment of many of the Coalition Government's education policies.

“The hallmark of successful education systems around the world is that children and young people to be taught by qualified teachers. However, the Coalition Government's academies and free schools are exempt from this requirement.

“The OECD report directly refutes the Prime Minister's assertion that choice and competition will raise standards and deliver more equitable outcomes for pupils. The international evidence confirms that the reverse is true.

“The Coalition Government's education programme will not deliver first class education for all and will widen inequality.

“The OECD report confirms that charging for education is not compatible with delivering quality education for all.

“The Coalition Government's cuts to funding for schools, colleges and universities has driven up the cost to young people accessing a decent education and it will deliver a fatal blow to the UK's competitiveness and economic recovery.”
