Press Release

NUT on pensions

15 September 2010

Speaking after the debate on pensions at the TUC Congress, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers' union, said:

"The NUT believes that the Government intends to use John Hutton's "independent" pensions commission to cut public sector workers' pensions regardless of the economic evidence.

"This is wrong and unnecessary. The agreements on public sector pensions already reached in 2005 will cut the rising cost of pensions over time to their current levels or below. Teachers are paying more and the scheme's retirement age has risen. These agreements should be left in place to do their work.

"The NUT will also call on the Government to abandon its underhand attack on indexation of public sector pensions and State second pensions. This will cost current employees and current pensioners alike many thousands of pounds. The NUT estimates that changing the indexation of pensions from RPI to CPI could, over a twenty five year retirement, cost someone retiring with a £10,000 pension a total of £36,000 or even more depending on inflation."
