NUT comment on George Osborne's speech

4 October 2010

Commenting on the speech by the Chancellor of the Exchequer at Conservative Party Conference, Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers' union, said;

"A belief in public services counts for little if they are not properly funded. If achieving a fair education for all children is the Chancellor's goal, Free Schools and academies are the wrong road to go down. They will prove costly and result in less efficient use of resources.

"It is easy to talk about cuts and how 'we are all in this together'. The level of cuts envisaged will devastate the lives of many, both directly and indirectly, and the effects will be felt for generations to come.

"Alternatives to reduce the deficit have been put forward by the TUC and a range of economists. There is a choice. The government needs to choose investment for growth for the sake of our schools and public services."
