NUT comment on appointment of new shadow education secretary

8 October 2010

Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers' union, said;

"We welcome the appointment of Andy Burnham as shadow secretary of state for education; it is a crucial role in what are challenging times for state education and I am sure that he will bring enthusiasm and ideas to the job.

"His predecessor Ed Balls expressed serious concerns about the academies and Free Schools programme, a concern I am sure that Andy Burnham will share.

"I look forward to working alongside the new shadow education secretary to ensure that, together with the other teachers unions, we secure for future generations a fair and democratic education system for all our children and young people".
