NFB welcomes government construction strategy
3 June 2011
The National Federation of Builders (NFB) sees the government's construction strategy as signaling the start of a more collaborative working partnership between industry and government.
The NFB particularly welcomes the publication of a two-year pipeline of work as well as the mandatory use of PAS 91 for construction pre-qualification.
Julia Evans, Chief Executive of the National Federation of Builders, said: "There is much to applaud in this strategy from the insistence on an increased level of standardisation to more integrated team working, and a clearer indication of future work so the industry can plan more effectively. However, we should not underestimate the scale of the task ahead which will require many companies to change the way they do business."
The NFB believes that a concerted effort is needed to drive down costs but without drastically cutting capital spending at a time when the industry is experiencing high levels of insolvency and very little growth.
The NFB has long advocated cutting the cost from the procurement process rather than from capital spending and is pleased to see the government making a commitment to achieving better value over the lowest cost.
