NEW POLICE BASE FOR CAMDEN TOWN UNDERWAY

23/11/05

A new police base in the heart of Camden Town is set to become a reality after a £300,000 building scheme started last week to refurbish a council property in Greenland Road.

Camden Council agreed to refurbish and fit out the dilapidated listed building for a new Safer Neighbourhood Police team for Camden Town, in response to community concerns. The team of police officers and Police Community Support Officers should be in the building in spring 2006.

The Greenland Road building will provide a base for officers to patrol from. It will also have space for members of the local community to meet with their local officers. It will not be a traditional police station where crimes can be reported. Anyone wanting to report a crime should call 0207 404 1212 or speak to an officer on patrol.

The extensive building work, which started last Monday (14 November) includes structural work, major internal refurbishment, and some new building to meet the needs of the police team. Work will include preserving the original Victorian shop front, fixing windows, installing air conditioning, building a cycle store and preserving other listed features such as an internal staircase and ceilings.

Cllr Jake Sumner, Executive Member for Community Safety, Camden Council said:

“A police base in Camden Town makes sense for everyone. Police have a difficult task but having it in the heart of Camden Town will mean more time patrolling on the streets and less time filing reports at Kentish Town station. Safer Neighbourhoods teams give the community the chance to make sure police in their local area respond to the problems that matter to them.

“I am extremely pleased that the police base will finally be ready. Residents have had to wait patiently, and the extensive works needed to make this dilapidated building fit for a modern police base and to preserve its heritage have added to the length of time. I’m sure all the residents of Camden Town will look forward to welcoming the new team in the spring.”

Chief Inspector Simon Turner from the Community and Partnership Unit, Camden Police added:

“Camden Police eagerly await the move to Greenland Rd, though it’s been a long time coming. The building will accommodate the new Camden & Primrose Hill ward Safer Neighbourhood team, providing a real local base both for that team, and a team of support officers whose primary role will be to support and work with Safer Neighbourhood teams and focus upon community based policing.”
