NEW PAT NATIONAL CHAIRMAN

26 July 2005

Lynn Edwards, from Yardley, Birmingham, will deliver her inaugural speech as the new National Chairman of the Professional Association of Teachers at 09.15 am on Tuesday 26 July during PAT's Annual Conference in Buxton. She was elected as PAT National Vice Chairman in 2004. She will serve as Chairman until July 2006.

Lynn EdwardsLynn Edwards was born just east of Birmingham in 1952 to George and Lucy Cochrane. She grew up within a mile of where she lives now, in the Birmingham suburb of Yardley. Lynn attended Church Road School (now Yardley Junior and Infant School), Erdington Grammar School for Girls (now Kingsbury School) and City of Leeds and Carnegie College of Education (now part of Leeds University), taking Geography as her main subject "because it included so many others".

She returned to Birmingham and taught at Audley Junior School and then at Longmeadow Secondary School. Lynn married Malcolm Edwards in 1975 and in January 1978 had twins, Paul and Ruth. After a career break until her children started school (in Yardley!), Lynn undertook relief teaching in junior and secondary schools for seven years, including at Saltley School, where she applied for a Geography vacancy she was covering and has been ever since.

Lynn joined the NUT briefly in her first year of relief work, but disagreed with being told to strike and joined PAT. After attending the Birmingham Federation's AGM, she became a Federation Committee member, started going to the Annual Conference (Durham in 1988 was her first) and became a Field Officer and later a PAT Council Member for the West Midlands. She has also served on a number of PAT sub-committees and working parties. Lynn was elected as PAT Vice Chairman in 2004.

Lynn has been a Christian since 1966 and is currently a member of Yardley Baptist Church where she serves as part of the Worship Team, which involves singing and using PowerPoint to put song words and sermon enhancement onto the screen at the front of the church.

Lynn enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren whenever she gets the chance. Her son Paul and his partner Séverine have a two-year-old son, Michael, while daughter Ruth and her husband Ben have a nearly-two-year-old daughter, Eve.
