NEW IMPROVEMENT SCHEMES SET FOR CAMDEN TOWN

20/12/05

Camden Town is set for a boost after a number of projects to improve the quality of public spaces in the area were approved by Camden Council’s Executive Environment Sub-Group on 13 December.

Improvement works to Regent’s Canal and Buck Street, the installation of CCTV in Greenland Road and Carol Street and the production of a free illustrated guide to travelling home safely, are among the projects which will benefit Camden Town’s residents in the coming year. The projects, which are designed to make Camden Town safer for residents, reduce crime and make the local environment more attractive, will be carried out in 2006.

The £360,000 allocated to the projects to improve the quality of streets and public spaces in Camden Town is from the Government’s Liveability Fund. Camden Council successfully bid for a £3 million grant from the government’s Liveability Fund in 2004 of which the bulk sum was allocated last year to four main projects: Inverness Street, Castlehaven Open Space, St Martin’s Gardens and Regent’s Canal.

These improvement projects have been identified through discussions with the local community and through community safety partnerships in Camden Town. To meet council approval, each project had to fulfil a number of criteria such as being beneficial to the wider community, enjoying local support and fitting into the council’s safer, cleaner and greener agenda.

Cllr John Thane, Executive Member for Environment said: “I’m confident that these projects will further improve the quality of life for Camden Town’s residents. On-going work funded by the Liveability bid such as new lighting in Camden Town and an increase in the number of street wardens patrolling Regent’s Canal and Inverness Street in the heart of Camden Town has already resulted in a noticeable decrease in overt anti-social activity. We still have a lot of work to do, but each step brings us closer to a safer and cleaner Camden Town.”

Cllr Jake Sumner, Camden Council’s Executive Member for Community Safety, added: "All of the projects will have an important role in making Camden Town an even safer place to live and combine with the many other initiatives being taken by Camden Council and the Police. The CCTV in Greenland Road and Carol Street, for example, will clearly help tackle the problems residents have been experiencing around drug dealers, and overhauling the pretty bleak staircase and wall by the Pirate Club is good news for people using the Regent's Canal."
