New factsheets highlight role of red meat in a balanced diet

3 January 2012

A collection of factsheets outlining the nutritional value and health benefits of red meat have been developed for consumers.

Fifteen factsheets have been produced by experts at the Meat Advisory Panel (MAP), with the backing of EBLEX, and are being added to the website www.meatandhealth.com. The aim is to highlight the role lean red meat can play in a healthy, balanced diet and dispel myths about red meat and health.

They contain information on a number of key areas, including red meat's role in contributing to vitamin and mineral intake, satiety and weight management.

Topics covered include:

·Red meat and minerals

· Red meat and zinc

· Red meat and bowel cancer

· Red meat and cardiovascular disease

· Red meat and weight management

Nicola Wilde, EBLEX education and health manager, said: "Lean red meat is highly nutritious and can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet. Our factsheets will give consumers a greater understanding of red meat’s nutritional value and help clarify the facts relating to specific health issues. The more knowledge people have, the easier it is for them to make better informed decisions about what they are consuming."
