NEW COMMUNITY TOILET SCHEME IN CAMDEN

23 March 2007

If you’re shopping in Kentish Town you need no longer worry about being caught short, thanks to a new community toilet scheme launched yesterday (22 March 2007).

Camden Council has teamed up with local community groups and businesses to provide more clean and safe toilets in the area. Members of the public will be able to use the toilets at five selected shops, restaurants and cafés, plus Kentish Town Library, free of charge even if they aren’t customers. The Kentish Town pilot scheme will run for 12 months and a further scheme could also be developed in future for Kilburn.

Cllr Mike Greene, Executive Member for Environment, Camden Council, said:

“Camden’s community toilet scheme is a practical way of making shopping in Kentish Town a more convenient experience for residents. We are bucking the trend for toilet closures by opening and making more public toilets available, which is important to local people. The council has worked closely with the very active community groups and business association to make this scheme happen in Kentish Town.”

Nick Mavrides, Chair of the Kentish Town Business Association, said:

“This pilot scheme underlines the goodwill and positive response from the businesses in Kentish Town. We are always keen to engage with the local authority with worthwhile projects that benefit the community.”

Local resident Jerry Williams, Chair of Kentish Town Safe and Happy Older People and Parents with Pushchairs (SHOPPP), said:

“I am really pleased that Camden Council and the local business community are continuing to collaborate and build upon the SHOPPP initiative to deliver the Kentish Town Community Toilet Scheme. Access to public toilets is important for all sections of the community and we welcome this initiative, which will hopefully be copied in other parts of the borough.”

Camden Council recently re-opened public toilets in the borough – Pond Square toilets in Highgate in June 2006, and West End Lane toilets in West Hampstead in September 2006.
