NATIONAL TRANSPORT AWARD FOR CAMDEN COUNCIL

29 July 2006

A Camden Council team has won a prestigious UK-wide transport award, for its project management of a London cycling scheme.

Camden Consultancy Service became ‘National Transport Consultancy of the Year, 2006’ for its work in co-coordinating the delivery of the London Cycle Network Plus (LCN+), in partnership with Transport for London and the 33 London Boroughs. The prize was given by the Robert Gordon University’s Centre for Transport Policy, at its National Transport Awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel, London, earlier this month (18 July 2006).

The LCN+ project aims ultimately to provide a well-designed, continuous 900km-long route of fast, safe and easy to use cycle paths and lanes. Its purpose is to encourage more people to get on their bikes, and provide for the needs of current cyclists.

The project has been completely turned around under Camden Consultancy’s management since 2001. Now the capital’s 33 boroughs, Transport for London and cycling groups have been united in a common approach, providing a consistency of design and quality in cycling schemes. So far, 460km of the network is estimated as completed, and over the same period there has been a 70 per cent increase in the numbers of people cycling, rising year on year.

Cllr Mike Greene, Executive Member for Environment, Camden Council, said:
“Providing a well-managed, safe and easy-to-use cycle network is a step towards encouraging more people to get on their bikes, which helps improve their health as well as the environment. It is a great credit to the work of the Camden Consultancy team that they beat off stiff competition from the private sector to win this award for their good quality management of this project.”

The National Transport Awards recognize local authorities and organizations that have made a real difference through their transport schemes, making improvements for transport users and for the environment. The winners are judged on their ability to successfully put projects into practice, take an innovative approach and bring in various partners to work together.
