National Governors’ Association elects new Chair

30th May 2006

Three months after the creation of the National Governors’ Association, by the merging of the National Governors’ Council and the National Association of School Governors, the new organisation has elected a new Chair – Judith Bennett, a school governor from Oxfordshire.

Judith is Chair of a rural primary school and a founder member of Oxfordshire Governors’ Association. A member of NGC’s executive since 1998, and Vice Chair since 2002, she has a background in education. Until 1993 she taught at secondary level. Her governance experience began as a teacher governor during the 1980s.
Asked to comment on her new role, Judith said:

‘I feel very privileged to have been elected Chair.’

Turning to the NGA, she continued, ‘Governance is at the centre of education and governors’ responsibilities have never been greater. I believe that the merger has provided the opportunity for an even stronger voice for governors nationally. NGA has sound relationships with many departments of government and partner organisations, but we must work to ensure that the governors’ view is the first to be sought when policy and initiatives are under discussion.’
