NASUWT welcomes attempts to end 'chaotic' approach to education policy development

Commenting on plans unveiled by Shadow Education Secretary Stephen Twigg for an independent Office for Educational Improvement, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said:

“Stephen Twigg is right to point out the chaotic effects that incessant political interference can have on the education system.

“There is merit in considering the establishment of an independent body to review national and international evidence to inform policy development, particularly as it would end the current abuse, misuse and cherry picking of evidence favoured by this Government to support its flawed, ideologically driven education policy.

“It would be important that such a body supports, and does not stifle, important professional debate on teaching methods and educational practice.

"If the Office for Educational Improvement simply dictates terms, then it would be no different to the massive centralisation of power currently taking place.”
