NASUWT responds to Welsh children's rights proposals

10 May 2010

The NASUWT has made a cautious response to the Welsh assembly government's (WAG's) consultation on Proposals for a Rights of Children and Young Persons (Wales) Measure.

Chris Keates, general secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union in Wales and the UK, said:

"The NASUWT is supportive of the proposals in principle but we are concerned to ensure that there is an appropriate balance between the rights of the child and the rights of the staff who work with children and young people.

"Further detailed work will be needed to ensure that there are no unintended consequences of this measure for staff."

Rex Philips, NASUWT Wales organiser, said:

"Such measures are not cost neutral and the NASUWT would be keen to ensure that there is a full assessment of the financial implications of introducing the new Measure."
