NASUWT comments on the announcement by Ofqual over exam board errors

Commenting on the announcement by exams regulator Ofqual that it is requiring each exam board to take actions to improve the control of exam papers, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said:

“It is right that Ofqual works with exam boards to ensure all possible steps are taken to minimise the chance of mistakes occurring in the future.

“The NASUWT welcomes the actions outlined by Ofqual that awarding bodies must take to ensure that the quality of future exams are protected.

“No system can ever be 100% error free and it is always regrettable when question papers are found to contain errors, particularly after all the hard work of pupils and teachers in preparing for an examination.

“But we must also consider this in context. In total, only 12 questions were found to contain errors, while the bodies that award A Levels and GCSEs set 60,000 questions during the same period.

“Given the size of the examinations system, the number of papers that contained errors last summer represents a small proportion of the overall total.”
