NASUWT comments on 'bonfire of the quangos'

July 6 2009

Commenting on the speech made today to the Reform think-tank on quangos by David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union in the UK, said:

"It is ironic that the Conservative Party which started the ball rolling in terms of quangos, is now identifying what the NASUWT has said all along, that introducing a cadre of uneclected, unaccountable and highly expensive quangos is not an effective or democratic way of regulating public services.

"The NASUWT has said all along that quangos do not represent good value for money and subvert democratic accountability.

"The NASUWT has long maintained that civil servants provide much better value for money and greater expertise than quangos. It was a bad day for the public when civil service jobs were slashed in order to ensure the proliferation of quangos.

"However, cutting back on quangos without any promise of restoring lost civil service jobs and without any commitment to increase investment in public services is just about making cuts by the back door.

"What we need is some honesty about the funding of public services and for the Conservative Party to come clean on its proposals for investing in the future of Britain's public services."
