NASUWT comments on £165m capital investment in Welsh schools

July 16 2009

Commenting on the announcement by the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) of £165million of capital investment for schools and colleges, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union in the UK, said:

"The announcement of more money to improve school buildings and facilities is very welcome but long overdue.

"The WAG had made a previous commitment that all schools would be fit for purpose by 2010.

"This promise is clearly not going to be met.

"This money will go some way to ensuring all teachers and pupils can work and learn in safe and effective environments, but the level of investment in school buildings and infrastructure must be sustained in the long term if standards are to continue to be improved."

Rex Phillips, NASUWT Wales Organiser, said:

"The NASUWT obviously welcomes the announcement of any new money to bring school buildings into the 21st century. However, there is concern that this funding will not be available until next year and will be spread over three years.

"Comprehensive capital investment programmes are already underway in England. Schools in Wales must not be allowed to fall behind those across the border."
