Press Release

Murdoch slayer Tom Watson MP to inspire union youth

13 January 2012

Whistle blowing Labour MP Tom Watson will tell young trade unionists that now is the time to stand up against the injustice of the government's austerity programme at the Communication Workers Union’s Youth conference in Birmingham tomorrow (Saturday).

Up to 100 youth delegates from the Communication Workers Union will come to Birmingham on Saturday January 14 to hear from the Labour Party vice chair Tom Watson how the party would tackle issues like job insecurity and the one million unemployed aged between 16 and 24. Representing 22,500 young CWU members, the delegates will also discuss a variety of issues from strike action to apprenticeships and the Arab Spring.

Mr Watson comes to the conference fresh from grilling executives from the Murdoch empire over the phone hacking scandal.

CWU general secretary Billy Hayes will also urge young members to seize the moment, organise and continue the fight against the injustice of the government’s economic programme.

Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, said: "This is a vital time for trade unions as the government seeks to turn the screw on working people across the country.

"The young are among those being hit hardest by the economic downturn, with talk once again of a lost generation.

"This conference will enable young trade unionists to have their say, bringing their concerns and aspirations for the future to the fore in this fulcrum of trade union activity that is Birmingham."

The conference comes to burgeoning city of Birmingham, with its diverse working population and distinguished history.

The conference begins at 10 am at the CWU office, 46-48 Summer Lane, Birmingham, B19 3TH.
