Press Release
MRI scanning in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment
22 October 2010
An article published in the BMJ suggests that women could be undergoing unnecessary breast surgery as a result of having magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Meg McArthur, Senior Policy and Information Officer at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said:
"According to national guidelines the use of MRI to assess early breast cancer patients is not routinely recommended. Therefore, it is not standard practice in England although it may be offered in certain cases where it has been shown to be beneficial.
We encourage women to speak to their doctor if they have concerns about their diagnosis or treatment."
