Press Release

Modern apprenticeships are flying high

24 February 2011

The skills levels of aviation cabin crew are set to soar with the development of a new Modern Apprenticeship for Aviation Cabin Crew.

The new apprenticeship – being developed by GoSkills, the Sector Skills Council for the Passenger Transport sector – will be built around the requirements of employers in the aviation sector in Scotland.

And this follows last week's announcement by the Scottish Government that a record number of Modern Apprenticeships – 25,000 – will be funded in the next financial year (2011/2012).

Although details about the funding levels and eligibility criteria have not yet been released, the expansion of the apprenticeship programme looks set to benefit the aviation industry and the passenger transport sector as whole.

GoSkills Interim Chief Executive, Neil Stokell, said: "This is great news. Our employers have asked us to develop a new Aviation Cabin Crew Modern Apprenticeship just at the time when the Scottish Government is expanding the apprenticeship programme. I would urge the Scottish Government to ensure funded places are made available for this forthcoming Modern Apprenticeship – particularly for those aged 20 and over."
