MEPs urged to back ‘Job Creation Directive’

British business organisations today underlined their support for a robust Services Directive, ahead of tomorrow’s key vote in the European Parliament. A coalition of the Institute of Directors, Federation of Small Businesses and the British Chamber of Commerce urged MEPs to endorse the Directive.

Releasing a flyer urging politicians to ‘open their hearts to the Services Directive’, the business groups drew attention to the Directive’s job creating potential.

Tina Sommer, European Affairs Chairman of the FSB, said:

“Contrary to the Unions’ claims, the Services Directive will not compromise worker protection or health and safety standards, and will instead lead to faster growth and more quality jobs. It is impossible to overstate how important this Directive is to sweep away the barriers to growth for small firms in Europe. It is estimated that it could create over 600,000 jobs. “

David Frost, Director General of the BCC, said:

“The Services Directive is the cornerstone of the Lisbon Agenda. We urge MEPs to show that they are serious about getting Europe growing and working again – and to vote for the Services Directive and the Country of Origin Principle.”

Miles Templeman, Director General of the IoD, said:

“This Directive will be a major boost to Europe’s SMEs which account for 99.8% of Europe’s companies. 89% of theses business are in the Services sector. We need to help SMEs to help Europe’s ailing economy.”
