Macular Disease Society statement in response to Dame Judi Dench interview

22 February 2012

We are very sorry to hear that Dame Judi Dench has macular degeneration. She is, sadly one of more than half a million people in the UK with this condition.

Research funded by the Society and published last week in the British Journal of Ophthalmology suggests that the number of people with the wet form of AMD is much higher than had been thought and with an ageing population it is clear that this condition is a significant issue for society and for the many people affected by it.

Although macular disease can be devastating, with the right support people can adjust to their sight loss and cope very well. Without support people can become isolated and depressed. It is therefore vital that good support and low vision services are available to everyone with macular disease.
