Low Carbon Vehicle plans show countryside is an 'ultra-low' priority

16 April 2009

'In today's plans to bring "ultra-low" carbon vehicles to urban areas, the Government seems to have forgotten the needs of the countryside. Many hard-pressed families in rural areas can barely afford to keep their current car let alone buy a new one', commented Ralph Smyth, Senior Transport Campaigner at the Campaign to Protect Rural England.

'The plans claim to recognise the "environmental and an economic imperative to do things differently". But the Government is still locked into increasing car ownership, increasing car mileage and increasing energy requirements for transport. A new approach is needed urgently to enable people to use cars when they actually need them, without being locked into car ownership and high carbon lifestyles. Car clubs are the best way to let people try out electric cars and make effective use of them. Rolling out low carbon car clubs in towns and villages across the country now would be lower cost as well as lower carbon than subsidising ownership in the future.'
