LONDON RSM JUNE 2005: JUNE SUN AND SALES HELP LONDON STORES BUT CHALLENGING TIMES AHEAD

Retail sales in Central London during June were 3.6% higher, on a like-for-like basis, than in June 2004, when sales fell, hit by the tube strike and poor weather.

Sales had fallen 0.5% in May 2005, and the average monthly gain so far this year is only 0.9%, against 3.9% for the same months of 2004.

The three-month trend rate of growth in June rose to a 2.0% increase from a 0.8% gain in May for like-for-like sales in Central London.

Sun and clearance sales boosted clothing and footwear but at the expense of home and big-ticket leisure, as shoppers preferred to think about summer holidays rather than home improvements.

The increase in London sales in June compares with a small decline for the UK as a whole.
