Localism - What does it mean for housing and mortgages?

16 June 2010

Housing minister Grant Shapps has set out a bold agenda as policy evolves under the new government. The new localism agenda intends to give local communities a much greater say in how they meet their housing needs. But what will it mean for mortgage and housing markets? Will the supply of properties increase, as the government hopes – or shrink because of the impact of nimbyism? And will the incentives provided to local communities be enough to help the minister deliver his hoped-for age of aspiration?

Next week's emergency Budget represents an early opportunity for the government to address the fears of builders and the social housing sector over the direction of policy and provide incentives for local communities to deliver a sufficient supply of housing, across the whole of the UK.
