Local traders join big names at top consumer awards

1 June 2009

A third-generation family butcher, a convenience store run by local volunteers and a central heating engineer are among 10 local traders going head-to-head for an award from consumer champion Which?

The Which? Local Business of the Year award recognises local traders that provide a great service or go the extra mile for their customers, and is one of 11 awards being presented by Which? at its annual awards ceremony on 9 June.

The local traders join the likes of Apple, Toyota and Waitrose who are all shortlisted for a Which? Award.

Apple’s iPhone 3G, BBC iPlayer and Ariel Excel Gel will compete in a new Innovation Award category, which recognises products and services with the potential to revolutionise people’s lives.

The award winners will be announced at a ceremony hosted by news presenter Natasha Kaplinsky. Inventor Trevor Baylis OBE and top chef Heston Blumenthal OBE will also present awards at the event, which was set up by consumer organisation Which? to celebrate the best products and services in the UK.

Which? chief executive, Peter Vicary-Smith, says:

"Tens of thousands of consumers have nominated their favourite local trader or local restaurant for a Which? Award. We’re delighted to recognise these often unsung heroes alongside a host of well-known names, as we celebrate the best products and services available to UK consumers."
