LGA responds to CQC report on Castlebeck

28 July 2011

Responding to the Care Quality Commission's report on Castlebeck, Cllr David Rogers, Chairman of the Local Government Association's Community Wellbeing Board, said:

“Any abuse or neglect of care home residents is unacceptable. These are some of the most vulnerable members of society and that they can be subject to mistreatment by a company with a legal obligation to look after them shows there are serious failings in the system.

“We will examine this latest report and work with CQC and Castlebeck to make sure action to improve standards is taken immediately and families are reassured their loved ones are being properly cared for.

“Councils see caring for and safeguarding older and disabled people as one of their most important roles and they need to be able to rely on conscientious providers and a system of robust checks and balances to ensure residents are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

“Recent, shocking events have highlighted a deeply worrying lack of training and standards in some care homes and a shameful level of complacency by management. Care home operators know exactly what levels of care are acceptable and there is simply no excuse for falling below these.

“We will be working with CQC, the department of health, care providers and other care organisations to make sure lessons are learned and such mistreatment cannot happen again.

“This case also highlights the need for a new approach to caring for people with learning disabilities and mental health problems, a shift away from institutionalising them and towards, where possible, helping them remain in the communities they know and love.”
