LGA comment ahead of the Autumn Statement

28 November 2011

Commenting ahead of the Autumn Statement, Sir Merrick Cockell, Chairman of the Local Government Association, said:

“Getting our economy growing is the country's number one priority. Councils can be an engine of growth, fostering local infrastructure investment and improving conditions for local businesses, if Whitehall loosens its grip and recognises that decisions about how to regenerate an area are best taken locally.

“Local government is the most trusted and efficient part of the public sector, and despite being cut harder than Whitehall has borne the brunt of the cuts in a disciplined manner. Whitehall must get its house in order and demonstrate the same commitment to providing value for money to the taxpayer. Times are tough, and councils recognise this, but it is essential that the drive to get the deficit down does not disproportionately impact upon the many vital local services people rely on every day.”
