Leading Suppliers Help VELUX Build a Sustainable Future with CarbonLight Homes

A range of companies, from ecological paint supplier Johnstone's, to national builders' merchant Travis Perkins, have helped ensure the success of the scheme that aims to set a benchmark for future sustainable housing: the VELUX CarbonLight Homes in Kettering.

The two zero carbon homes, which set out to prove that it is possible to build energy efficient, sustainable housing that is practical, appealing and comfortable for the consumer while being easy for the volume house builder to replicate, are now complete.

The suppliers were selected by VELUX and architect HTA and their products specified for their unrivaled sustainability credentials, high quality products and exemplary service (see appendix for full list).

The homes' SIP roof panels were supplied by Unilin Systems and fitted by RoofSpace Solutions and John Brash supplied the cedar shingles which make up a large proportion of the building envelope, both walls and roof. Daikin, the renewable heating specialist, supplied the air source heat pumps for the homes, which will be used to supplement space heating requirements.

The attractive, modern kitchens were supplied by Symphony Kitchens; the sanitary ware was supplied by Travis Perkins and the white goods by Electrolux, while the lighting design and supply was the work of Philips.

Paul Hicks, Design and Construction Coordinator for the VELUX CarbonLight Homes project, comments: "We have been extremely fortunate to have worked with such a substantial number of well-respected specialists within the sustainable construction and interiors industry. Their support has been vital to the success of the project, ensuring that the homes achieve a zero carbon status, while using high levels of daylight, natural ventilation and renewable technologies to promote the health and well-being of the occupants and minimise energy use. We are extremely proud of what we have achieved together."

VKR Holding, which owns VELUX and has business interests in the roof and vertical windows, solar thermal and ventilation and indoor climate sectors, provided products from the other companies within the group. VELFAC supplied the vertical windows for the homes, WindowMaster provided the building management system design and supply, SONNENKRAFT put forward the solar thermal tank and controls supply and Drexel und weiss supplied the MVHR design and product.

To ensure the successful delivery of the project, VELUX has worked closely with key partners including HTA Architects, Willmott Dixon, Kettering Borough Council, and North Northants Development Company.
