'Latest apprenticeship data shows provider commitment to helping young people'

27 October 2011

The Government has today published provisional data showing that over 442,000 young people and adults started an apprenticeship in 2010-11.

In response, Graham Hoyle, chief executive of the Association of Employment and Learning Providers, said:

"Today's apprenticeship figures show that training providers are fully committed to helping young people find high quality training and a job in extremely tough economic circumstances. Over 262,000 young people in the 16 to 24 age group started an apprenticeship in 2010-11 – a 15.9% increase on the previous year.

"Despite the economic challenges, a record number of apprentices are completing their programmes as well. The success rate is now approaching 75% which compares favourably with the best in Europe.

"We understand that some commentators will be looking at the large increase in adult apprentices over the past 12 months, but it is important to emphasise two key points in relation to this. Firstly apprenticeships were never designed to be exclusively about the recruitment of young people into new jobs and adult apprenticeships must also follow the officially approved standards laid down by the sector skills councils and the National Apprenticeship Service. Secondly the number of starts in Advanced Apprenticeships has actually increased at a faster rate than starts in Intermediate Apprenticeships, so we are not seeing any ‘dilution' in the level or quality of training that providers are offering.

"The latest data should therefore be celebrated as an undoubted success story due to the hard work of employers, providers and the apprentices themselves."
