JOURNALIST GETS TOP GOVERNOR JOB

28 June 2007

The National Governors’ Association (NGA) this week appointed a new chief executive officer. He is Phil Revell, an ex-teacher who has spent the last ten years as an education journalist. He replaces Jean McEntire, on her retirement
after five years at the helm of the NGA and one of its two predecessors, the National Governors’ Council.

Phil has been a regular contributor to the Guardian, the TES and other national newspapers. His first exclusive was a front page story in the TES about a £1million NVQ fraud, and he was the first print journalist to shadow an Ofsted inspection. In 2005 his book The Professionals was published, a critique of the way the UK trains and develops its teachers. His work outside the media encompasses a variety of organisations, including the DTI, British
Gas and the NAHT.

Before becoming a journalist Phil worked for nearly 20 years as a teacher, ending up as head of the pastoral curriculum in a secondary school in Shropshire.

“Phil brings us an enormous knowledge of the educational scene,” according to Judith Bennett, chair of the NGA. “His understanding of what makes an impact on both the public and the decision-makers puts him in an excellent
position to raise the profile of school governors and their national organisation. Just over a year after the merger that created the NGA, his ideas and enthusiasm will, I am sure, propel the organisation forward in an exciting
way to the next stage of its development.”

Phil Revell will start in the post of Chief Executive Officer of the National Governors’ Association on 1 August.
