Institute of Fiscal Studies research warns of increasing levels of poverty

11 October 2011

Commenting on the Institute of Fiscal Studies' new research, Richard Hawkes, Chief Executive of disability charity Scope, said:

“In the past week, two pieces of research have been published exposing the reality about children living in poverty.

“Families with disabled children are much more likely to live in poverty and break down. They have higher living costs and will be considerably worse off this year.

“The Government pledged to protect vulnerable families, yet the combined impact of losing local services, wage freezes or seeing their benefits adjusted is pushing families of disabled children over the edge.

“There are several proposals within the Welfare Reform Bill, currently being debated in the House of Lords, that could heap further misery on the lives of thousands of families.

"We urge the government to listen to disabled people and their families about the effects these changes will have on their ability to live independent lives and play an active role in their local community.”
