31 October 2011

Record turn-out in national ballot for House of Commons debate

In a record breaking ballot of the UK Youth Parliament, 65,532 young people cast their votes to determine five issues to be debated in the House of Commons on 4th November. This represents more than a 1,000% increase on last year, showing the depth of interest and passion among young people in the UK today on issues that matter most to them.

The five issues being debated in the House of Commons chamber are -

1. 'Make public transport cheaper, better and accessible for all'
2. 'No to tuition fees, yes to graduate tax'
3. 'Zero tolerance towards bullying in schools'
4. 'End child poverty'
5. 'A Greener future for Britain'

The debate will be chaired by the Speaker, Rt Hon John Bercow MP, following opening remarks from the Leader of the House, Rt Hon Sir George Young MP, and the Leader of the Opposition, Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP.

325 Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs) will debate each topic, calling for a response from the relevant Government Ministers, and choosing the one top campaign for UK Youth Parliament in 2011-12.

Harry Carter MYP for Sheffield said 'It's truly inspiring to see young people choose issues to debate that politicians would baulk at. By representing young people on such a diverse and varied range of topics, the Youth Parliament has got a mandate to effect change in this country. As an influential organisation, the youth parliament, under the guidance of the British Youth Council is showing how robust it can be in representing young people'
