Improving ESOL in Camden

30/06/06

An innovative scheme that tackles unemployment among refugees is hosting a seminar on Friday 7 July to examine how English as a Second Language (ESOL) provision in Camden can be improved.

RAISE (Refugee Access into Sustainable Employment), a Camden Council employment initiative, commissioned research to identify the state of ESOL learning opportunities, and the difficulties faced by people who need to access these services.

As a result, RAISE is hoping to bring together colleges, community organisations, training providers, funding bodies and other stakeholders to develop an ESOL strategy for the borough.

Camden Council's Executive Member for Equalities and Community Development, Cllr Andrew Marshall, said: “Refugees and migrants looking for jobs have particular difficulties, such as having to deal with a new culture and a different language, but are often highly skilled and dedicated, so have a lot to offer”.

“Our research shows that current services do not meet the needs of potential ESOL learners and improving the provision of ESOL training in Camden is vital if we are to tackle these barriers into work.”

The seminar is on Friday July 7, 10am to 1pm at The Window, 13 Windsor Street (off Essex Road), EnlightenNext Building, Islington.
