HPC launches consultation on Welsh language scheme

1 June 2010

HPC consult on Welsh language scheme

The Health Professions Council (HPC) has today launched a three month consultation to invite stakeholders for their views on its proposed Welsh language scheme.

The HPC is committed to the principle that the English and Welsh languages will be treated on the basis of equality. The Welsh language scheme sets out how the HPC proposes to apply the principle in regards to its work. This includes the HPC’s delivery of a bilingual service, fitness to practise proceedings, and communication with the Welsh speaking public.

Michael Guthrie, Director of Policy and Standards said:

“The HPC acknowledges the importance of providing a service in the preferred language of the stakeholders as part of a quality service and recognises the culture and linguistic needs of the Welsh speaking public.

“The HPC is committed to the delivery of a bilingual service in accordance with the content of the Scheme and has worked with the Welsh Language Board to achieve this. The consultation sets out how the HPC proposes to plan and deliver its services to the Welsh audience.”

“I would encourage everyone to have their say on this by participating in the consultation."

The HPC is inviting stakeholders to respond to the proposed Welsh language scheme. In particular, the HPC is interested in whether the proposals outlined in the scheme will enable Welsh speakers to engage with us in our work.

The consultation will put the proposed scheme before a wide range of stakeholders and members of the public. Any individual or organisation with an interest in these issues is invited to respond to this consultation.

The consultation on the proposed Welsh language scheme will run until 1 September 2010.
