Homeless Link responds to government housing strategy

21 November 2011

Jacqui McCluskey, Director of Policy and Communications for Homeless Link, the umbrella body for 500 homelessness organisations, said:

"Everyone has the right to a roof over their head. With the number of homeless people on the rise and a chronic shortage of affordable housing, a credible plan from Government is vital.

"We support the objectives of the housing strategy published today, with the emphasis on improving the quality and affordability of homes, whilst bringing stability to the housing market. We also welcome the recognition of the role that having a stable home plays in promoting health and well-being.

"The strategy includes many positive initiatives, particularly the plans to make social housing fairer and extra money to bring more empty homes back into use. However, only time will tell whether the range of initiatives within the strategy will make a major and significant impact on the chronic shortage of affordable housing."
