Helping to end violence against women and girls

This week the Home Secretary launched Government plans to end violence against women and girls. The plans, launched on International Women's Day, set out the specific actions the Government will take with its key partners and make reference to work that Skills for Justice is doing to agree national standards for the work of Independent Sexual Violence Advisers (ISVAs).

These national occupational standards (NOS) will set a common agreed national benchmark for ISVAs and others who provide support to victims of domestic abuse and violence. The standards will form the basis of future qualifications and provide a way of quality assuring training, so that people who support women and girls who are victims of sexual violence are able to develop the skills they need to provide appropriate services to help them.

The NOS, which are currently being developed and are due to be available in the Autumn, can be used to develop role profiles and training programmes for those delivering these crucial services to women and girls. This will help organisations that provide these valuable services to develop a competent and highly skilled workforce.

Skills for Justice Products and Services Director Amanda Ryalls says

“As the Government's localism agenda begins to take hold, these nationally agreed standards will provide a crucial benchmark of good practice, so that services can then be delivered at a local level, based on the specific needs of people in our communities, who need appropriate support.”

Two documents have been launched this week by the Home Secretary, Theresa May MP - Call to End Violence Against Women and Girls- action plan' was published alongside the government response to Baroness Stern's review into the handling of rape complaints.
