Local people are being asked to voice their ideas for the future re-development of the Camden Town tube station site at a public meeting next week on 25 January.

Camden Council is holding the meeting to discuss the preparation of a planning brief for the site and wants the public's views to help shape this. This comes as London Underground Limited (LUL) has told the council that it wants to put forward a new proposal for the site. Camden Council agrees that the station is in need of major improvements and has agreed to work on a planning brief.

The 'brief' is a formal planning document that will help to guide any future development on the site, by setting out the council's preferred options for how the development above the proposed new underground station might look - in terms of building layout, style and scale - as well as what uses it might include. The council has adopted policies on all these matters but has decided it would be helpful to apply these to the particular circumstances of this important site.

At the same time the council will be commissioning a review of the conservation area statement, which covers this site, so that the brief can benefit from an up to date assessment of the character of the conservation area. Consultation is currently planned to take place early in summer 2006.

Following the meeting, Camden Council will prepare a 'draft planning brief' and consult on this later in 2006. If adopted, this guidance will become a 'Supplementary Planning Document' that will be used in considering and making decisions on future planning applications for the site.

Camden Council's Development Control Sub-Committee refused planning permission on a previous proposal from LUL, a decision upheld by the First Secretary of State (ODPM) and Secretary of State for Transport in June 2005, following a Public Inquiry.

Camden Town tube station site is among the council's top priorities for regeneration - the station needs to be modernised and suffers from major overcrowding at peak times. However Camden Council believes that the site above the station is also very important, because of its significance as a future Camden landmark and because any development will have a strong impact on the town centre. It therefore deserves the highest quality design and the right mix of uses to make a positive contribution to the area. The council's priority is to secure the best development for the future of Camden Town and for the people that live and work, and travel and visit there. Camden Council will continue to work with LUL to find a way forward.
