HAVE YOUR SAY ON CAMDEN’S NIGHTLIFE

CAMDEN’S alcohol policy is currently under review and residents are encouraged to share their views.

Camden Council is responsible for licensing and enforcing the licences of more than 1,400 premises including pubs, clubs and restaurants. It is currently reviewing its licensing policy that details how the Council, as the Licensing Authority, will carry out its functions under the Licensing Act. The Council is keen to hear from residents, businesses and any other interested parties about changes or improvements that could be made.

The consultation was launched in August and will run until Wednesday 24 October. The Licensing Committee will consider all the views at its meeting in December 2007 and the new Statement of Licensing Policy will be published in January 2008.

The new policy will include what should be taken into consideration:

When an application is received for a licence to sell and supply alcohol, for example a corner shop wanting to sell alcohol
When an application is received regarding providing entertainment at a particular premise, for example a pub wanting bands to play at the weekend
When an application is received for a late night alcohol licence, for example extending a licence to sell alcohol from 11pm until 3am
In areas that have a lot of pubs and clubs for example so require higher protection from the council and police.

Public meetings are being held to give residents the chance to have their say on the review. A meeting will be held at the British Library on Thursday 4 October and at the Camden Art Centre on Thursday 18 October. Both meetings will start at 6.30pm.

Cllr Don Williams, Chair of Camden’s Licensing Committee, said: “This is an opportunity for individuals and establishments to have their views heard on Camden’s night time activity from restaurants, cafes, pubs and clubs. Let us know how you think licensing applications should be dealt with and help shape our future strategy with regards to licensing in the borough.”
