Governors announce the winner of Clerk of the Year Award

On Saturday 10th March the National Governors’ Association (NGA) announced the winner of its third national competition for Outstanding Clerks to Governing Bodies. The ceremony took place in the Banqueting Suite of the Birmingham Council House with over 70 guests. The awards were presented by guest of honour, Baroness Howe of Idlicote CBE, President of the NGA.

The national winner for 2007, Janet Johnson, clerks schools in Essex. Janet is clerk to 14 school governing bodies and numerous committees. Nominated by not one but three different schools she has the reputation of knowing exactly when to advise and when to leave the decision making body of the school to make the decisions.

The winner Janet said, “Winning this title of ‘Clerk of the Year’ is fantastic for me but more importantly my schools and the governors who give of their time freely and do a fantastic job. They are the true winners - right across the country”. Adding, “Oh and the laptop and prize money was such a welcome surprise”.

NGA’s high-profile Clerks’ Awards are helping to raise the profile of the support given to the over 300,000 school governors across England; the largest volunteer force in the country. This year's judging panel were particularly impressed with the quality of the shortlisted entries. NGA Director and Senior Judge for the award, Carol Woodhouse comments:
"The dedication, commitment and enthusiasm shown by the clerks continue to improve year on year. Good clerks make a significant difference to the effectiveness of governing bodies."
