Government's response to 16-19 report inadequate

Commenting on the publication of the Government's response to the Education Select Committee's Fourth Report on 'Participation by 16 – 19 year olds in education and training', Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said:

“However much the Government tries to spin and distort it, the Education Select Committee's report highlighted serious concerns about Government policy in scrapping the EMA.

“Since the publication of the Select Committee's report, these concerns have been further compounded by the fact that the number of enrolments for Further Education has fallen sharply this year.

“Contrary to the Government's claims in its response, funding for post 16 is being cut savagely, which will further impact on access for young people, damaging their economic prospects and future life chances.

“The Government's response to the report typifies its approach to anything it does not wish to hear - ignore it and carry on with the flawed policies.

“This is unacceptable and inadequate given that the economy is flat-lining and there is growing evidence that we have a lost generation of young people, whose only prospect is unemployment.”
