Government Must Give Reassurance on Heathrow Link – FSB

19 December 2005

Commenting on the new Government guidance on regional air access to London, the Federation of Small Businesses has demanded that the Government do more to reassure Northern Ireland’s business community that the route to Heathrow is to be protected.

Wilfred Mitchell, FSB Policy Chairman said:

“Along with our colleagues in the General Consumer Council we have expressed concerns that the Belfast-Heathrow Air Route could be at long term risk. If Northern Ireland where to lose this then it would be a disastrous blow for the Northern Ireland Economy and have a negative impact on tourism”

“We recognise that the Government is limited to what it can do because of European Commission Rules; however this does not stop the Direct Rule Ministers making serious representations to Brussels. The FSB will be making contact with our three MEPs to ensure that this matter is raised at the highest level in the European Commission

“While this may be some time away we need a united and co-ordinated campaign now to lobby for the retention of this vital air route which is crucial if we are to expand the economy of Northern Ireland.”
