Government defeated over School Buildings Project

11 February 2011

Commenting on the High Court ruling that the scrapping of the Building Schools for the Future scheme brought by six councils against the Education Secretary Michael Gove, was unlawful and 'an abuse of power', Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers’ union, said;

"This is a victory for the six local authorities who have taken action against the Education Secretary’s decision to scrap BSF projects in their areas. The decision by Michael Gove to end the projects was outrageous particularly in light of the money they are apparently finding to bankroll the Free Schools programme.

“BSF was never a vanity project. Many schools in this country are in real need of refurbishment or rebuilding. While there are many other issues that head teachers face, not least the draconian cuts to the education budget, having to study or teach in substandard conditions is demoralising and nothing short of shameful for one of the richest countries in the world.

“This is a stark warning to Government that their indecent haste to railroad through ideologically driven policies with no regard to the needs, or will of the community will not be taken lightly by the public or indeed the courts.”
