GoSkills welcomes Hayes support for apprenticeships

8 February 2011

GoSkills, the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for Passenger Transport, welcomes the government's latest demonstration of support for apprenticeships. Skills Minister John Hayes has announced that the apprenticeship frameworks are to be re-invigorated. This will give a greater degree of recognition and status to those individuals who complete their apprenticeships and it will make clear that apprentices can progress to higher learning through these frameworks.
Neil Stokell, GoSkills Chief Executive said:

"The government are to be congratulated for taking the important decision in these economically challenging times to not only to invest in apprenticeships, which will help the UK economy both now and in the future, but also for recognizing the real worth of an apprentice".

He went on:

"GoSkills will play its part in working with its employers to define a higher level apprenticeship (level 4) and in delivering the overall apprenticeship strategy within the passenger transport sector. I am particularly pleased to see British Airways taking on 120 apprentices this year following other employers in our sector such as First Group and Transport for London who have traditionally supported apprenticeships".

The Government has also announced that it will be working with the Department for Work and Pensions in looking at how people on unemployment benefit could be offered apprenticeships places as well as seeking to reduce the level of youth unemployment with the Department of Education.
