GMB 'Workers Memorial Day'

26 April 2010

Avoidable injuries at work are a drain on the NHS and economy and should be tackled by employers in conjunction with trade unions says GMB

Wednesday 28th April is now officially 'Workers Memorial Day' which is part of International Workers Memorial Day which is marked around the world. In the UK it is a day of action that aims to reduce the annual 180 deaths of people at work in 2008/9. The vast numbers of avoidable injuries at work are a drain on the NHS and economy and should be tackled by socially responsible employers in conjunction with Britain's trade unions.

GMB members across the UK will be holding two minutes silence in their workplaces, flying flags at half mast, planting memorial trees, organising rallies and questioning local politicians on health &safety issues.

John McClean, GMB national health & safety officer said, "Over the last five years GMB has campaigned on many issues affecting GMB members' health & safety at work. From the campaign to restore compensation for workers with pleural plaques caused by their jobs, informing workers about the danger of cancer causing substances at work, and working to protect security guards from violent assaults, and surveying ambulance workers who may be being exposed to low frequency radiation through using Tetra Wave radios.

Workers Memorial Day is an opportunity to pay tribute to all those who have been killed or hurt by their bosses negligence and build on the legacy of what we have already achieved."
