GMB to meet Veolia to raise concerns over sale of water companies in South East

7 December 2011

The UK water industry has been turned into a cash cow for investors while the needs of employees and customers have been downgraded says GMB

GMB commented on the announcement by Veolia Environment on the sale of the business.

Mick Ainsley, GMB Organiser said, “This announcement says that three water providers, Veolia Water East, Veolia Water Southeast and Veolia Water Central, are up for sale and that there are moves to combine the three regulated water companies into one business.

GMB will be meeting the senior management team at Veolia Water East over the coming weeks. We will raise this announcement. Also on the agenda will be the outstanding pay offer of 3% that has been rejected by GMB members.

Water customers across the Home Counties will be worried about what impact this news will have on prices. The reality is that the UK water industry has been turned into a cash cow for investors while the needs of employees and customers have been downgraded.

GMB members, who work as water workers for these companies, should not have to worry about their jobs over the Christmas and into the New Year. GMB will be reminding the current owners and any new owners about their responsibility for customers and employees.”
