Press Release

GMB along with the other steel unions will work with the company to mitigate any compulsory job losses

2 December 2011

GMB responded to announcement by TATA regarding mothballing the hot strip mill at its Llanwern site in Newport, South Wales, with immediate effect.

Keith Hazlewood, GMB National Secretary said "The announcement that TATA Steel UK is to mothball the Llanwern hot strip steel making mill in South Wales yet again demonstrates what a roller coaster Industry the Steel Industry is given state of world economy.

This decision is a devastating blow for the UK Steel industry, the economy and the local community of Newport, South Wales and the supply chain in the surrounding area, especially at this time of the year.

GMB along with the other steel unions will work with the company to mitigate any compulsory job losses."
