Give fuel rebate to haulage industry, says Unite

Britain's professional lorry drivers today (Thursday) called for government help to protect the haulage industry from the worst impact of the economic recession.

The truckers' union Unite said today that hauliers should get a fuel rebate to help the industry through the slump. "The haulage industry will be vital to our economy when the recession ends," said Ron Webb, Unite national officer for haulage.

"There has been a dramatic fall in the volume of goods being transported in Britain, and Department of Transport figures today suggest that the number of lorry drivers seeking work has increased fivefold in the past year. This is a very serious situation which threatens the ability of our country to respond adequately when the economy begins to recover.

"We are conscious that the drastic impact of the recession on haulage is a reflection of the loss of jobs and production across the economy. That's why Unite members in road transport will be marching in Birmingham on May 16 with thousands of other trade unionists to demand government action for jobs and a better future."
