Funding gap a disgrace

NUT Cymru today labelled the latest statistics on Local Authority Education expenditure in Wales a disgrace. The comparison data for Wales and England shows that Wales spends £604 per pupil less than England even though the average spend per head of population in Wales is only £8 less.

Wales Secretary - David Evans said:

"Inadequate funding impacts upon everything that a school is seeking to achieve in trying to provide for their pupils. Class sizes, threat of redundancies, continuing professional development, resources, the availability of classroom assistants are all adversely affected when the money is not made available.

"This woeful lack of funding has a direct and detrimental impact upon our childrens’ education. The fact that the gap has grown to this level is nothing short of a disgrace."

General Secretary Christine Blower said:

"In November 2009 the new First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones pledged to increase education funding in Wales by 1% per annum with effect from 2011. The aim was specifically to close this funding gap. The gap has grown in the last year by 14.6%. Clearly the current pledge is too little too late and we urge the Welsh Assembly Government to act immediately to redress this disparity."
